Indeed Malachite wasn’t like the others on the Grim’s crew and he knew it. With a sniff he cleared his tears wiping them away. “V had just been made first-mate when my family sold me to the Grim crew. He couldn’t stop Capt’ Sidsear, but he did, because he soon became Captain…” The half-elf became quiet for a little bit. “I…just thought I’d have more time to pretend we were a family…just…stupid of me.” Malachite said angrily.
— Intimately acquainted…it didn’t suprise him but what did surprise him was a small twinge of jealously at the statement. Other than subconsciously snuggling him during the night, Astrin had kept his word. While the two Captains exchanged humorous comments and shared the bed, they had yet to share anything else.
“I was born in paradise...” Violet made the off-hand remark leaving it at that. Violet called Ren over and the two began to talk in their native tongue, both Devo’s and Slade’s names mentioned. V’s First-mate shook his head disapprovingly at first but then shrugged. “Mh’alka Alv’verhey.” Ren replied.
The otherwise bleak looking face of Violet’s eased up and he cracked a smile repeating the words himself. Ren patted him on the shoulder and nodded, taking his place to help relay Astrin’s orders to the Grim’s men. The Grim crew did indeed heed Astrin’s order’s simply for the wellbeing of the ship they intended on stealing later.
Violet took a back seat to Astrin again allowing him to do the work, it really didn’t bother him that someone else was giving the orders to make port. All that mattered to Violet now was that he stay with ‘The Victory’ come hell or high water, he couldn’t let go of this ship. Maive was now topside, she was there to help make sure that the Grim crew didn’t start anything while both Captain’s departed the ship.
Violet descended behind Astrin, walking just slightly behind the Heresy Captain as he announced their arrival to the crew and villagers hidden from sight. The Grim Captain was on edge like he always was, he and his crew didn’t make friends very well and often weren’t welcome in small ports like these due to their reputation and when they did it was only out of fear.
When Vitalis stepped out, V’s tail twitched a little in envy upon inspection of Astrin’s Intimately Acquainted, it twitched again in irritation when he was referred to as odd company.
“Odd Company is what you get when someone is dumb enough to fall into a trap meant for someone else.” Violet said annoyed, crossing his arms, suddenly regretting gifting his cigarette to Devos.

“It’s good to see you Vitalis!” Astrin said beaming. The two men spread their arms wide, before hugging each other tightly. He watched V from over Astrin’s shoulder, cocking an eyebrow V’s passive aggressiveness.
“You didn’t really go for the Ca’lan gold?” Vitalis asked Astrin, pulling away and holding him by the shoulders.
“It was too good to say no Vitalis.”
The dark haired cat man shook his head.
“I told you it was a trap, it was so obvious.”
“Yes but you thought another pirate had set it.”
Vitalis waved his hand noncommittally, that detail didn’t matter.
“And the Heresy?”
At the mention of his lost ship Astrin frowned, deeply.
“Lost?” Vitalis questioned his tone noticeably dejected. Astrin nodded his confirmation. “Sorry, I know what she meant to you.”
“Clawed her right out of Captain Hansel’s dead hands,” Astrin actually spat on the ground after mentioning the name, and the momentary scowl on his face was deep. It was probably the first real sign of hate V had ever seen cross Astrin’s features. “What are you going to do?”
“I don’t think she was sunk…...But I don’t want to just leave her there either. Go back, see if she aint been raided for everything she has, and then give her a proper burial…..The least she deserves after…..After all the shit that happened below her decks…”
“And above,” Vitalis added gravely.
The insinuation was there, these two weren’t just ‘intimately acquainted’ they had shared history.
“Well, we’ll worry about that later! I assume you’re here to resupply? Make sure to say hello to the village elder, you haven’t been this way in a while, she probably misses you.”
At this Astrin chuckle.
“We’ll stay out of your way, but I’ll leave some men around if you don’t mind,” he said but he looked from Astrin to V at this. Making direct eye contact. The implication, his men were loitering to keep an eye on V and his men.
“We’re leaving in the morning, stick around and have a meal with us later,” Vitalis said clapping Astrin on the back before walking off.
“Right….” Atrin stood for a moment collecting his thoughts.
----
Yuuki put a sympathetic hand on Mal’s shoulder, gave him a look that wasn’t just pity but understanding too.
“I think a lot of people get that notion about their first crew, but a lot of crews…..Arn’t like that. Depends largely on the captain. Captains like Astrin tend to attract a lot of strays. Most people on this ship were either picked up because they had no where else to go, or were rescued,” he looked down at the deck below and saw Josephine and Justine running around Enzo’s legs as he said that.
“A few of us were here when Astrin first formed the crew ....We've grown since then, but he tries to make everyone feel welcome. Some people stay, some go, rarely has he had to force someone to go. I dunno what your attachment to V is, but you could make a family here, Astrin would never push you away, unless you did it to him first.”
----
Enzo stayed on deck, Astrin wanting at least one of the crews first mates to remain with the ship. Their gunner, the tall woman with Rabbit ears called Katalina also remained on deck. Astrin’s helmsman was lazing over the helm watching everyone they were unfamiliar with, with a sharp eye.
Those that disembarked seemed to be the lower crew members, most of Astrin’s important players remained on the ship. The only notable faces that disembarked were the cook, the doctor and the navigator.

When Vitalis looked at him over the shoulder of Astrin’s embrace, his scowl deepen and he looked away in disdain. Violets red tail flickered back and forth with agitation. Agitation of feeling awkward around others. Agitation that even such innocent physical contact would cause him panic.
V was pulled away from his inner brooding by Astrin’s mentions that Vitalis had thought another pirate had set the trap. His white brows clinked together, unsure if there might be more to that detail that Vitalis waved off. The half-demon continued to observe the pair and listen to their conversation as the odd company. He was particularly keen in watching Astrin when he spoke; curious about his bedmate.
Violet was watching Vitalis, so when the dark haired cat man and the half-demon locked eyes it was obvious why he was leaving some of his men. Violet shrugged his shoulders like he didn’t care. “Whatever makes you feel better.” He said it almost under his breath. The Captain didn’t trust his own crew and frankly felt better that Vitalis was here.
Once Vitalis left and Astrin had a chance to collect his thoughts V took a light verbal jab at Astrin. “Village Elder? And please don’t tell me also intimately acquainted…”
— The troublemakers on V’s crew hung around the ship until it was obvious that the Hersey wasn’t dumb enough to leave her unguarded. Instead Slade and Devos disembarked to conspire elsewhere, while the others stayed on the ship. Ren watched them leave.
“Oh what I would give to have the simple life again.” He said to no one in particular with a sigh. But since he had learned that Violet was alive after Ly’Ren raided their island, he had vowed to the young half-demon that he would help him get revenge. But living for revenge was tiring and he worried about the type of man Violet would become if he continued on as hard as he did without remembering that life was more than revenge and pain. — “Thanks Yuuki.” Malachite felt a bit better with Yuuki’s reassurance. Maybe it was for the better. The half-elf wiped the tears from his eyes. Being around the Hersey crew had really given Malachite a glimpse into the kind of crew he wanted to be a part of, still he felt angry with V.
“V’s been like a big brother to me. I wanted to be just like him…” He trailed off after witnessing Slade and Devos disembark. The half-elf circled his hands around each other gathering air in his hands, until he clasped together in his hands the way one would hold a bug. He whispered a message into the space between his hands and slowly opened them to reveal a beautiful iridescent blue and green butterfly. It fluttered away easily from his perch in the crowsnest with it’s message to inform V of the pairs departure. —

Astrin was pulled from his thoughts at V’s comment. He laughed.
“I am, but not in the way you’re thinking,” he answered simply. “Well then, let’s get these wonderful people to work, then I’ll go and pay my dues to the village elder. Want to come with me?” He wasn’t sure what good introducing V to the village elder here would actually do, but the man seemed like he needed to talk to more people who weren’t his own crew.
Astrin whistled to get the attention of some of his disembarking crew. The cook, the doctor and the navigator all coming over to him.
“Kio, you and Lock here sort out fresh provisions, Locke should be able to lead you and some men to the fresh water spring further in land. Get as many barrels as you can carry. Then see about getting some fresh fruit, the villagers know us here, I’m sure you know who to ask about where to find what we need. Rope in as many of V’s crew as you can, but not so many that you risk them overpowering you should they try something stupid. Keeping them busy might keep them out of mischief.” He wasn’t sure how likely that was to actually work, but busy hands were less likely to find their way to trouble.
“Angelus, see what aid the people here might need, this village has a large elderly population. As payment see if there aren't any supplies they might spare.”
The doctor gave him a nod before heading towards the village proper.
True to his word a number of Vitalis’ crew were milling around. Some bothered to actually try and make themselves look busy, others didn’t really bother. Something about Vitali’s crew was it was less diverse than Astrin’s. The vast majority were feline beast-kin, with one or two humans and half-demons.
------
Enzo and Katalina made sure the men on the ship were busy, and helped Kio and Lock when it came to setting up a group to go and get provisions of water and fresh food. He made sure there were more of their own men in the group, but sent a selection of V’s with them. He sighed a little quietly. It was stressful having to watch his and his crews back so much. Katalina patrolled the deck, making sure people were behaving, while keeping an eye on V’s two disembarking trouble makers. She’d witnessed the little show between the big one and their captain earlier, clearly this one and the man with him were the ones to watch.
----
“You’re welcome. “ He said acknowledging Mal’s gratitude. He couldn;t help the chuckle that escaped him at the half-elfs comment that he wanted to be just like V.
“Forgive me if this offends but…..Surely there are better role models, perhaps not on your crew but still….” He watched the boy as he cast his spell with some intrigue. Magic was not a skill in Yuuik’s repertoire.

Malachite grinned at Yuuki’s question not the least bit offended. “People don’t know him like I do. V’s really a great guy once you get to know him.” The young half-elf confessed touching the gun at his hip that Violet had given him to remind himself that V was just doing what he thought was best for his young ward. “V taught me magic, he taught me to read…I owe my life to him.” His grin turned into a genuine smile and a gleam of adoration in his forest green eyes.
—
V blinked a few times when Astrin said yes but just smiled slightly, shook his head and shrugged. “I might as well, since I’m curious now as to who you won’t Casanova.” V made use of a character from a popular book suggesting that he could read. The half-demon followed him back, once again taking a back seat to Astrin.
It didn’t take long for Malachite’s butterfly to reach him to distract him from admiring Astrin’s qualities. He lifted his gloved finger granting it a place to perch and brought it close to his ear. It beat it’s iridescent wings, delivering an audio message in Malachite’s voice as it whispered to him that Slade and Devos had departed the ship. With it’s mission accomplished the butterfly burst into tiny lights that faded as they disbursed in every direction.
Just as he was formulating a solution to the two of his crew when Maive approached him. It was exactly who he wanted to see and he knew she was already on top of the situation. Maive was good at what she did and V trusted her skills. “Keep tabs on our two friends and if they start any trouble with the locals, kindly put a stop to it.” V requested and she gave him a nod before departing in the direction in which Slade and Devos went in.

“This one is a little bit old for me to Casanova,” Astrin said with a chuckle once he was done giving out orders. “Not that she wasn’t beautiful in her younger days, or so I am told.”
He had noticed Maive and caught maybe the tail end of V’s conversation with her, but made no comment or mention about it. He motioned for V to follow him and began to lead the way to the back of the village. It wasn’t the largest village around, and fairly simple the huts were made of clay bricks, and thatched roofs, likely from the local area. The people there were all some kind of beast kin, though again they were mostly feline. Most regarded Astrin with a soft but weary smile, and a wave. However they were clearly cautious of V’s company.
He eventually stopped outside the largest hut which had two guards standing outside, however they didn’t look to be villagers but likely members of Vitalis’ crew.
“It’s okay, I’ll make sure he behaves Bane,” Astrin said, addressing a man almost a whole head taller than himself, and much broader with jet black fur and dark skin.
Reluctantly the man modded to his partner and they both stepped aside. They paid little mind to Astrin but both watched V like a hawk.
“Matzi are you in here?” He asked. It was a simple enough dwelling, and there was something boiling away on a stone fire. Astrin helped himself to an orange that was on the table and began peeling it as he walked.
“Astrin’ahun Haine!” It was a quite croaked voice but clearly held authority. “You know how to ask for things before you take!” Astrin actually tensed up a little, before a little old woman walked out from behind a beaded curtain. She had short white hair that looked like it had once been quite wild and curly but has tamed in her old sage. She came to just above Astrin’s waist, so small was her Stature, and bent her back.
“I’m sorry Matzi. May I have this orange please?”
“Well since you already half peeled it. Who is your new friend?” Her tone suggested that he knew what kind of 'friends' Astrin kept.
“Matzi this is V, he was the captain of the Grim. V this is Matzi’ahun, my maternal grandmother and chief of Reclamation Island,” Astrin said introducing the two with a smile.
----
Yuuki raised his eyebrows slightly in disbelief. “I guess he doesn’t often let people get to know him?” He questioned a little further. “Well I suppose he hasn’t shanked the captain in his sleep yet, so he must have some decency about him,” he mused.
Not a lot of captain’s would be willing to co-share a ship, let alone share the bed with their long time rival.

Violet followed Astrin, his semi permanent scowl doing nothing to reassure anyone, but he was looking around. The huts of the village reminded him of his own island home. When they came to stop outside a large hut, he just looked at one of the guards, noting they were intensely watching his every move.
Slender eyebrows quirked when Astrin helped himself to what he assumed was the elder in question’s fruit and he was about to tsk when a familiar but different name was spoken, it’s tone quiet evident to be the elder Astrin spoke of.
V seemed a bit off when he was suggested to be Astrin’s friend and he certainly knew what that inclination meant. Before he could protest again, Astrin’s introduction left him off balance and a bit stunned. His grandmother? He could certainly see where Astrin got his looks from.
“It is a pleasure to meet you. Your island almost reminds me of my own.” He commented, his tone a little more gentler than usual. Clearly Astrin trusted him enough to bring him to see a loved one, and V held that higher than simply just sharing a bed during sleep. And then that thought drove him to the imagery of intimately sharing a bed - which lead to an extraordinary thing. V began to blush. It was slow and he knew it was happening, he could feel the change in the temperature of his skin. You see, V didn’t blush the way you would consider normal. Instead areas of golden brown skin began to turn a shiny gold starting in the area around his neck.
“And how many friend’s have you brought through here?” V mused to Astrin, trying to focus his attention that Astrin would sleep with anyone, and there for would introduce his grandmother to anyone. And therefore the feelings he was feeling weren’t justified. This was nothing special, this was just Astrin living up to his reputation. He felt heat in his neck start to slowly fade, but he wasn’t sure if it would go away before someone had noticed.
—— “Thanks Yuuki. You’ve made me feel better and I look forward to being apart of the Hersey Crew.” Malachite said relieved, looking down on deck to see if Maive was still on board. When he was up there he particular kept an eye on his fellow crew-members and with the two that left, Maive was ranked next on his list. The half-elf didn’t trust her, there was something odd the way she acted when she thought no one was looking.
“Did you see Maive get off the ship?” Malachite asked Yuuki.

Astrin quirked a curious brow as he watched V beginning to, what he could only assume was blushing. It was subtle but the corners of Astrin’s mouth pulled into a knowing smirk. He opened his mouth to answer V’s question, however his grandmother got there first.
“Ha, you assume too much, this boy hardly returns here at all unless he needs something,” the old lady explained. “I assume you are only really here to resupply.”
“Matzi…..” Astrin all but sighed, but he couldn’t argue. Despite the island being where his grandmother lived, it was not his nor her original home. Thus she, and some of the villagers were all that really drew him here, aside from its convenient location on their route to the cove.
“Regardless, V isn’t the only addition I brought with me.”
Matzi gave him a stern look when he said this. Astrin did not in fact have a habit of bringing strangers with him to the island.
“I may have…...run into a spot of bother with the Ly’Ren navy. Fortunately me and my friend here, were afforded an opportunity to not only escape but take over their ship.”
Matzi shook her head disapprovingly at this information. “So who is here Atsrin’ahun?”
“My crew, the entirety of the Grims’s crew and some navy sailors we took as prisoners?” Astrin hazard as he explained.
Again the elder shook her head. “Well since Vital’isen is also here, and I hear it is not often of late the pair of you cross paths, we might as well have a large feast tonight. I will tell the other villagers, I will also warn them to be weary…..” She added looking to V and trying to get the measure of his person.
------
“The elven woman who looks like she’d shank you in a dark alley? I think I saw her talking to your captain briefly, I didn’t see where she went after. Is there something wrong?” Yuuki queried looking thoughtful.

Violet felt his blush coming under control when Astrin’s grandmother explained that Astrin’s only stopped by when he needed something. He watched the interaction between the family members, realizing that he had been wrong about Astrin bringing a slew of strangers to the island in the past. This only seemed to conflict him a little more, not now quiet sure what to think. The gold blush of his skin returned to normal.
And when the old woman’s attention fell on him, Violet straighten his shoulders aware that he was being evaluated. “My crew isn’t the type you want at a party.” Violet confessed feeling a bit ashamed about the type of crew he sailed with and then he turned to Astrin.
“I can make sure mine behave while you catch up with your friend tonight.” Violet was excusing himself from any kind of festivities although it did weigh heavily on his slowly warming heart. The half-demon kept himself socially distant from others as his reputation demanded, but spending time with Astrin and the Hersey crew reminded him of the warm connections he had excluded through out the years. Besides, he didn’t really want to watch Astrin mingle with an old intimate flame either.
—— “That’s the one.” Malachite replied to Yuuki’s question. “She joined our crew 2 years ago or so. Just butted her way in trying to get cozy with the Captain. The Captain trusts her,” Malachite paused. “But I don’t.”
The half-elf began to climb out of the nest, a bit bothered at his gut instinct and feeling it was his duty to go spy on the spy. “I, uh…I need to…go.” Malachite stumbled over his excuse to leave and instead quickly scaled down the mast to the desk.

Matzi nodded in a way that showed she had a complete understanding of V’s crew just from that one statement alone.
“I’ll warn the villagers to be extra vigilant and to keep an eye on them. I don’t have to warn you what happens if they try to cause trouble here?” She asked, quirking a brow to Astrin, whom she was already assuming had similar rules on the ship they occupied together about what happened if people misbehaved. Though if they did do anything untoward towards the village and those living in it, they would be at the mercy of Astrin, Vitalis and the remaining villagers. It would not be a smart move.
It was Astrin’s turn to quirk a brow at V. It was remarkable how the one gesture accentuated the similarities between him and his grandmother. Their brows arched in the exact same way.
“Well it’s your choice, but I’ll make sure Kio at least prepares something for you, your crew has no cook unless I’m mistaken?”
-----
Yuuki’s expression implied he wanted to ask more questions about Maive and Malachite’s suspicions of her, but the human didn’t stop him from descending the crows nest. He waited a little bit before whistling for Enzo and tilting his head in Mal’s direction.
Enzo in turn got the attention of Mikhale, their helmsman as they lazed over the helm of the ship. Enzo indicated for Maikhale to follow the boy. The half-demon straightened up, stretched and lazily followed before physically melting into the shadows and hoping from one to the other as they followed, only materialising when there was no shadow close enough for them to hop to.

There had been regret the moment he had excused himself and when Astrin offered to have the cook prepare something, Violet was preparing to backpedaled. “Well, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to enjoy in some local hospitality and appreciate that we sailed into this port today and not Port Royal.” Violet twisted his own arm so to speak. It would probably be good for his crew anyway, provide a much need distraction for his crews frustrations.
Violet might not had looked it but he had been stressed since his crew had sunk a blade into Astrin’s side. It was more than just the tension of mutiny and the half-demon couldn’t quiet put a finger on it. He had enjoyed the time he had spent together and didn’t exactly want to see it end.
“Does cilrag grow on this island?” Violet asked Astrin’s Grandmother, the item in question a foreign word. “Sorry, yurlaci. Would you mind if I harvested one or two plants?” He corrected the name of the item he was looking for. Yurlaci was an island plant that often grew wild near the shorelines and was often used for cooking spice, but it wasn’t the spice he was looking for.

Both Astrin and his grandmother looked a little confused at the word V used, but Matzi nodded with understanding when V corrected himself. She ended up getting a young man from the village to show V where to look.
From there it was a busy day. Astrin flitted around between checking up on his crew, giving new orders to both the Hersey and Grim, greeting the villagers and old friends. More than once he could be seen walking around in the company of Vitalis, laughing or reminiscing about something.
Meanwhile after returning from gathering enough fresh water to last them the remainder of the journey to the cove, Kio got to work helping the villagers prepare dinner, a couple of people from Vitalis’ crew joined in, likely his cook and cabinboy. It was shaping up to be quite the feast what with 3 crews and a whole village to feed.
Tables were lined end to end, with burning torches aplenty to keep the place well lit. While most of the crew were given leave to join the feast, Astrin again showed he was no fool. He had his most capable crew members on a 2 hour rotation to guard the ship, and the prisoners in the hold. There were at least 3 of Astrin’s crew on the ship at all times, and the captain himself made frequent returns to make sure everything was fine. The ship hadn’t been loaded yet, so it wasn’t like stealing it would even be worth it, and any cannons had been emptied and the ammunition was locked away. He took no small chances.
Presently Astrin was dancing with one of the two little girls from his ship, her feet placed on top of his, Vitalis was dancing with the other.
On their stolen ship was Enzo, Mikhale and Katalina currently on guard.

Violet took his time harvesting the two plants, choosing from a wild field of them, selecting two that had yet to bloom, while harvesting a few blooms of the surrounding plants. He carried them back to the ship in clay pots he had purchased, securing them in their quarters and secured the blooms to dry. Maive was keeping an eye on the two trouble makers and between V and Ren taking turns as acting addition deterrents on deck, Violet didn’t think his crew would be up to anything. Although he had kept his distance from the islanders when he’d leave the ship, the half-demon found himself being roped into helping with a few tasks.
Malachite had wander all over the island looking for Maive with no luck, but it didn’t stop him from searching until the sun began to set and the feast began. Maive, Slade and Devos were all still gone. He returned to the ship expecting to get some kind of reprimand from Violet, only Violet wasn’t there. Violet was watching Astrin dance with the young child from a distance of course, unaware his usual stern expression had soften. The majority of his crew enjoying themselves in their small cliques gathered in various places, certainly they were no threat tonight.

A number of Astrin and Vistalis’ crews were inter mingled with the villagers, clearly these were the people already well acquainted with the island and its inhabitants, while the rest all sat with their respective crews. After dancing for a while Astrin encouraged the two young girls to go eat. He spotted V off to the side, but shrugged, he wasn’t going to force the guy to join in. He went and took a seat himself, sitting between his grandmother and Vitalis. All three were clearly well acquainted.
Astrin’s cook was still helping a number of villagers spread food around the various people seated around the table. When he got to Matzi she made him bend down so she could kiss him on the cheek. V might realise that what he was watching was a group of people with a real sense of family and community with one another. Astrin was however seated somewhere where he could still watch the ship and V.
Mikhale had returned to the ship much earlier than Malachite simply because he’d realised the boy was on a fool's errand, and simply didn’t want to waste his whole day following the boy around the island aimlessly all damn day. It also meant it looked less suspicious and would be harder to Mal to even realise he’d been being followed.
“Mal come have some dinner!” Yuuki shouted from where he was sat at the table, having noticed the boy's return.

Malachite had looked defeated he had sat down next to Yuuki, his plan to find and follow Maive hadn’t worked out well at all. His stomach roared to life when he saw the food realizing he had forgotten to eat all day. Meanwhile Violet was glad to see the half-elf return, he had started to grow worry since he hadn’t seen him almost all day. V breathed a little easier.
“Reminds you a little of home doesn’t it?” Ren had stopped next to his Captain. His First Mate while a burly man was clearly a big teddy bear at heart and had already made friends will a few of the villagers during the days chores.
“It reminds me of my failure to keep everyone safe.” Violet said the words bitterly, once he had a name to the hint of melancholy that he was feeling.
“You were still a child.” Ren wanted to place a reassuring hand on V’s shoulder but knew better. “Mh’alka Alv’verhey.” Ren reminded him. “Come. Enjoy the fruits of friendship while we can.”
Violet looked at him skeptically, but offered no resistance when Ren coaxed him to the table. The pair sat down in a space that just happened to be across from Astrin, Vitalis and Matzi; for some reason Violet looked a bit caught off guard by that fact. Quickly he diverted his red eyes elsewhere regretting the decision to come to the social gathering.
“This food looks so good. It’s going to be a shame to go back to having no cook, hire a cook. Please hire a cook.” Ren begged of his Captain. V propped his head up with his arm, his elbow on the table looking unimpressed by his First Mate’s plea. “There’s a reason we don’t have a cook Ren. None would sail with us.” Violet replied wishing he had stayed on the outskirts of the social hub.
