From the very beginning Heaven and Hell had been locked in opposition to one another, long before the existence of mortal men. Battles raged against Angels and Demons across different dimensional planes. Ultimately the majority of them were utterly pointless, fighting for the sake of fighting. No real wins gains to be made by either side, only losses. A never ending war completely separated from the realm of mortals.
One such battle had recently ended, the horizon filled with the bodies of the fallen from both sides. Some still clinging to life; the field ripe for the picking of scavengers looking to benefit from the scraps.
In the distance the dying sounds of one last battle.
Solaris plunged his lance into the body of his enemy lying prone on the ground. Around him bodies upon bodies, the corpses of more than a few dozen Demons, all slayed at his hand. He pulled his lance from the body beneath him. With heavy breaths he threw off his helm, tossing it away and losing his long white hair. Next was his upper body armour, it was cracked and broken anyway. He threw that aside too, it was useless now.
With heavy breaths he took several steps towards a tall dying tree. He rested his back against it, before sliding into a sitting position. The battle had been long, he was tired, and had suffered several serious wounds. He was an experienced fighter, he even had a reputation in both Heaven and Hell as an absolute nightmare on the battlefield. But this fight had dragged on too long, and he’d suffered several serious wounds as a result.
As his eyes grew heavy he watched the horizon. The sky was a mixture of oranges and blacks, there was smoke rising from the ground all over the place. All he could smell was blood and death. He knew no one was coming for him.
But that was fine. He’d fought in many of these battles now, he knew it was all pointless. But he went for the thrill of it, it was where he felt most alive and it seemed fitting for it to be the place where he would die.

Before Envy had had the right to claim the name, Envy was known as Elpis Fascinare of House Invidia. Elpis was a name his mother gave him, a girl’s name that oddly meant hope. That wouldn’t have been entirely a bad thing, had he not been born a demon - or been born the bastard of the original Envy Invidia and the last in line for his father’s seat. And to make things worse, he was by all accounts the runt of the family. Although he was a recognized bastard child, it did nothing to save him from the harsh treatment he received from his father and half-siblings. This only furthered his ambitions in seizing the Envy name. He couldn’t wait to see the look on their faces when that happened….if it ever happened.
What Elpis had in ambition, he lacked in actual power. Thanks to his mother Elpis had the ability to turn things to stone, although at his current level he couldn’t even petrify at measly cat no matter how hard he had tried.
“The family is going to kill you if they find out what you’re up to.” Barnaby, Elpis’ familiar a cat-demon was draped across the shoulders of his master.
“That’s why they won’t find out and you’re going to make sure you keep your mouth shut.” Elpis replied as he picked over the battlefield, looking for those that were barely hanging on to life. When he would find one, he did his best to push out their dying breathes - sipping on each gutturally moan like the last few drops of a fine wine. By themselves they weren’t enough to bother with, but with a battle field Elpis would feed on both heaven and hell’s agents.
“It’s actually quiet deplorable hell’s badge means nothing to you.” Barnaby flattened his ears. “Listen, if you ever want a human form, I suggest you shut up.” Elpis replied unsure as to why he even kept Barnaby around. The obvious answer was that he was a beloved gift from Elpis’ mother.
While he worked his way along, the demon kept his eyes peeled for the real prize he had come to try to find. Visiting the aftermath of the battlefields had almost become a ritual for Elpis; collecting the final essence of the dying had just been a perk. He was actually looking for an angel, any angel actually as he wasn’t about to be picky about it.
And it was through the smoke, he saw Solaris shedding his armor and surrendering to his wounds. Hesitantly Elpis approached the tree, his golden horn’s barely visible and lost in the waves of golden hair. “This is a bad idea.” Barnaby warned no longer lazily laid across his masters shoulders, but instead ready to bolt at a moment’s notice. But Elpis wasn’t deterred, his golden eyes on the prize.

Solaris let his eyes fall closed, he could feel his consciousness fading, and he was ready to let go.
That was until he heard the sound of approaching footsteps. One of the many vultures of the battlefield no doubt, come to scanage what they could, or feed on the breaths of the dying.
Abhorrent.
Solaris lived for the battlefield. He enjoyed the chaos and the slaughter, more than any Angel should. He didn’t mind the thought of dying, not here anyway. He burned his life for the sheer joy of it, but he wouldn’t have his last embers stolen away by a creature too weak to face him at his best.
For someone practically knocking on Death’s door, Solaris had a surprising level of strength left in him. Solaris’ eyes snapped open, and faster than his eyes would have been able to follow, Elpis would find the bloodied golden tip of Solaris’ lance at his throat. The Angel was still laying against the tree, in fact he’d barely moved save for his lance arm which despite Solaris’ condition was held remarkably steady as it held the weapon to the Demon’s throat.
“Go find your meal elsewhere,” Solaris warned, though his voice was clearly strained.

The moment the spear tip was at his throat, Elpis raised his hands, albeit not enthusiastically. Barnaby on the other hand, hissed and scrambled off his masters shoulders to a safer distance.
“You must be confused,” Elpis smiled and took several steps back, “because what other purpose could you possible serve now?” The golden haired demon found a suitable place to sit amongst a pile of dead. Like a vulture, he had the patience to wait. “You and your breathen have been fighting and dying on the battlefield….and for what?” Elpis posed the question, looking down at the face of the dead he was sitting upon, pushing back a bloodied lock of hair for a better glimpse. “For the vermin like me to grow fat and strong upon. It is the natural order of things.” Elpis looked back at Solaris, golden eyes assessing just how much fight the angel still had in him. “Any regrets before your life fades away? I hope you got enough fucking in. I don’t think your kind fucks enough. A pity really.” The demon taunted the dying angel.

Solaris sneered at Elpis’ words, his spear arm remaining steady even as the demon backed off.
“Assuming I ever served a purpose other than my own.” Words which weren’t completely true, he knew he fought on this battlefield for the designs of a higher power. He’d simply twisted that purpose to suit his own insatiable bloodlust.
“At least you know you’re vermin,” Solaris said with a huff, finally lowering his arm. Likely out of exhaustion more than anything else. If he’d had the strength required to move, Elpis would already be dead and they both knew it. “But I don’t think you’ll ever grow strong like that,” he said, letting his head fall back to rest against the tree.
This was exhausting. Just talking was exhausting. “After all, what strength is there to be stolen from the dying….”
He snorted at Elpis’ attempt to taunt him. He was going to have to try harder than that to get under Solaris’ skin. Fucking hadn’t been particularly high up his list of priorities, and he didn’t really understand why some demons considered it such a big deal.
Well…It didn’t really matter now anyway.
His fading sight shifted away from the demon, and towards the horizon. The sky was a painted sunset, framed by dark clouds of smoke. It would be beautiful if Solaris didn’t already know that it was always sunset here. His own golden eyes dropped closed…one last time.
Or for what he thought would be the last time anyway.

Elpis couldn’t help the smirk on his lips as Solaris lowered his weapon. “After all, what strength is there to be stolen from the dying….” “…more than you think.” The demon whispered under his breath as he waited for Solaris to lose consciences. Feeding off the dying had given Elpis enough strength that he no longer needed a cain to walk. It was only then when he was sure that Solaris posed no danger to him did he move in. It was no easy feat to transport home a wounded angel by himself, but it was practically by the grace of god that Elpis made it back without his family or any prying eyes seeing him. Elis had been preparing this moment for quiet sometime and the room in which he was going to keep his prize was no exception. It was a circular room made from stone with eight mirrors set within the wall; four cardinal directions and the others halfway between each point on the compass. There were no doors, and the ceiling was nothing but darkness.
When Solaris would awaken he would find himself chained to a cobblestone floor by the spreader bar at his ankles. His arms were pulled back and laced between the space of his arms and back was metal rod that had giant rings attached to hoisting hook that held the angel up enough. Solaris would find his wings were out and laid out to either side of his body and wrapped in a cursed red cloth that kept the angel from dematerializing them. The manacles restraining him were enchanted and were set to deliver a nasty shock to Solaris if he should try to use his powers. The angel would also find that he healed, but not completely from his fatal injuries. Around Solari’s body was a loosely wrapped long black silk scarf that embraced the contours of his form and giving him small amount of modesty. Elpis was no where to be seen.

The silence and the darkness that encompassed Solaris was welcome. It was a type of bliss, one that was unexpectedly and in Solaris’ opinion rather rudely disrupted when he felt himself regaining consciousness.
To say he was disorientated was an understatement. He was sure he had been on the brink of death. His wounds had certainly been fatal, too much for even his innate healing to cope with. It took a while for his vision to properly start to focus, and his head felt heavy and full of fog as he tried to lift it to look around.
The room, to say the least, was unfamiliar to him, everywhere he looked there seemed to be a mirror reflecting back at him. His wings were out which was uncharacteristic for him, and when he tried to dispel them he found that he couldn’t and the very effort was exhausting. Naturally the next thing he tried was to use his powers to free himself. He gasped in pain from the unexpected shock.
Heavy breaths fell from his parted lips, until…He started laughing. The whole thing was, if you asked him, utterly ridiculous. Finally he thought himself free of the farce that had been his life and at the last moment that lasting peace had been denied him.

It was at some point during Solari’s laughter that Elpis arrived through one of the mirrors, but he didn’t look as he did on the battle field when Solaris had first met him. This Elpis was slightly hunched over, forced to heavily rely on a cane due to leg that did look as if it would take the weight. Instead of golden hair, it was simply blonde, and the golden horns that were upon his head appeared as plain grey stone. He carried with him and it seemed with great difficulty a bag in his other hand unburdened by the walking cane.
“Nice to see you have a sense of humor.” Elpis smiled. He had been waiting for this moment, for his newly captured angel to awaken and learn of his situation. Elpis and Barnaby had a bet on how Solaris would react when they awoke. Laughter had not been a reaction either of them had picked. He set down the bag in front of Solaris, then turned to retrieving a bucket, which he flipped over so the demon could sit down directly in front of the angel.
“But I have to ask; what is it you find so amusing?” Elpis was curious.

Solaris’ laughter died away when he noticed someone enter the room through what was essentially a portal. At first he didn’t recognise the demon, but the more he looked at him the more Solaris began to realise and it was a hard task not to start laughing again. Though a snort did escape him. He’d pegged Elpis for a weakling when he’d first laid eyes on him, after all the strong would not scurry about the battlefield stealing the dregs of life from the dead.
He smiled at Elpis’ comment about his humour.
“I did ask what strength is there to be stolen from the dying, and it seems the answer is, ‘not much at all’.” It was clear what Elpis had gained had not lasted long.
“But I have to ask; what is it you find so amusing?”
Solaris watched Elpis as he sat down.
“What isn’t absolutely hilarious about this farce? After many many battles, finally I could be free of this endless production Heaven and Hell call a war. Only to have my peace snatched away from me by a demon who is stuck at the lowest rungs of power, stealing from the glory of others just to survive.”
This wasn’t to say that Solaris was suicidal, far from it. Nor was he really tired of battle, the slaughter didn’t bother him, in fact he enjoyed it far more than any of his kind should. What he was tired of, was being used as a tool for someone else, and now he was clearly about to be used as a different kind of tool for another's purpose.

Elpis quirked an understanding smile. He had been use to the insults and dismissals from nearly everyone he came in contact with; even his family. But that’s what family was for; to eat each other alive. And because of his low status in the family, he had learned to wear the weakness openly and use it as his armor. There was only so much fun his siblings could have picking on a pitiful thing as himself. He needed to hide his strengths, which didn’t amount to anything impressive. Everything he had gathered before he had used to prepare for keeping an angel captive.
The demon sat fiddling with his cane as Solaris explained the humorous light of this situation. Elpis had no doubt about it that Solaris would end him in a moment if the angel was given the chance. The irony wasn’t lost on Elpis and the demon gave a little chuckle. “Can’t steal another has thrown away.” He quipped “The way I see it, your battles were meaningless, your deaths were meaningless. And since the end was all you longed for, it must mean your life was meaningless as well. Besides, I’ve got a better use for you. As you said, what a meager meal. But a crumb to a lion is feast to a mouse. And a resourceful mouse can make all those little crumbs add up over time. And even a mouse can climb.” And Elpis had been resourceful, he had to be if he wanted to rise to his ambition of taking the Envy name. What Elpis lacked in physical power he more than made up for it with his cunning.
“You’re buddies fed me enough to lay the foundation on which to build my empire on. And the lion you once were,” Elpis took the end of his cane and poked Solaris’ chest with it. “are going to be nothing but a cow to suckle me fat.” Elpis smiled and scooted himself and the makeshift chair across the short distance to Solaris’ right wing. He wasn’t hesitant about reaching out and stroking the appendage with both hands, his cane laid across his lap. Solaris’ would find that the cloth around his wings kept him from moving them, but the angel would feel everything the demon would do to them. “I’ll never tire of angel wings…just the feel of the feather…it’s almost enough to make me orgasm.” Elpis grabbed ahold of the front of the wing and began to feel around the bones, locating the joints. He was looking for a suitable site for a ring, a place that wouldn’t easily tear out and could take some restraint. When he found the place he was looking for, Elpis took the cane from his lap, twisting the top of it off and unsheathing a long sharp pick.
“I’ve heard the wings are quiet sensitive to an angel,” The demon took hold of the wing, worming his fingers down to touch the flap of skin under the feathers, just behind the bone. And in painfully slow fashion began to push the sharp point down through it until the metal slide out the other side. Elpis reached into the bag and took out a large ring, following the path of the pick as he pulled it out and closed the ring around Solaris’ wing.

Solaris rolled his eyes at what he saw as Elpis’ attempts to provoke him. He didn’t need to be told that the battles he and many others were thrown into almost daily were meaningless, he already knew. Unless something drastic happened to shift the tide it would go on forever, and whatever that ‘something’ was, Solaris knew it wasn’t likely to happen in the theatre of battle. Not that Solaris actually cared. Elpis had yet to learn just how ‘a typical’ Solaris was for an angel. He wouldn’t be hearing any half-baked yet fully believed ideology about justice and evil from this one.
“I wouldn’t say I longed for the end, if that was all it was, dying would be a simple matter.” Just merely that he had been tired of it, the pointlessness.
What did seem to get more of a reaction however, was as Elpis started to get to his point, a scowl crossing his features. Though he snorted at the idea that he had been ‘buddies’ with the other Angel’s now laying dead and discarded on the battlefield. They had all been pawns, just like him, and he had no attachment to them. Even so he wasn’t thrilled by metaphor comparing him to a cow which Envy intended to use to grow fat with power.
Gold eyes followed Elpis as he scooted across the floor. He made a disgusted sound and rolled his eyes again as Elpis claimed he could almost climax from touching an angel’s feathers. What followed next was a sound of discomfort as the demon began to feel around for the bones under the skin. Something he might notice were the feel of healed fractures and breaks. Though Solaris’ wings appeared immaculate on the surface, what lay hidden was a lifetime of battle wounds and scars.
“I’ve heard the wings are quite sensitive to an angel.”
Solaris eyed the sharp implement now in Elpis’ hand. He winced at the way the demon dug his fingers down into his skin and joints. But he didn’t cry out when Elpis slowly pushed the pick through his wing. It hurt, agonisingly so, but the only sound Elpis got from his captive was a sharp hiss. What blood was able to escape the wound soon began to stain Solaris’ white feathers red.

“Nothing short of art.” Elpis commented on the scarlet bleeding into the white, stroking the softness with a sense of jealousy. He gave a tug on the ring now piercing the wing, just to make sure it was secure. Although Solaris tried to hide it, the demon could taste the discomfort seeping off the angel; and he soaked up every scrap that radiated outward.
Again Elpis slid the makeshift seat and bag to the otherside, repeating the process with the other wing; giving the ring a tug when he finished installing it. When he was done Elpis cleaned off the pick he had used and slid it back into the cane sheath; and for a time did nothing but observe. He rolled the cane back and forth across length of his hand, golden eyes absorbing the sight. It was so beautiful it sent shivers down his spine. And it would be his and only his.
“I suppose it’s time to see if this plan of mine bears fruit.” He said with a slim smile. Elpis stood with little difficulty this time and when he walked it appeared as if he wasn’t heavily reliant on it. With an almost theatrical flare he kicked the bucket out of the space, it hit the wall the wood splintering against the stone; and struck the tip of his cane on the ground, a magical circle spread out over the whole of the space. He tossed his cane to the side, no longer needed it for the time being. Elpis had spent nearly a century bringing all the knowledge he had accumulated and all the meager little scraps of power together for this; a binding spell of his own design. As far as he had researched, no one had ever successfully bound an angel before although there were records of those that tried. But that wasn’t going to stop Elpis, in fact it motivated him even more. He would be the first, even Lucifer would notice him.
An immense power flooded through out the space, crackling wildly along the symbols and lines of the magic that enveloped the entire room. Elpis was speaking out his spell with his head bowed palms raised up and outstretched as if he was praying, the words that left his mouth might only have been whispers, but their holy nature left in smoke as he spoke the divine prayer. Elpis sliced opened the palmed of his hands with his horns; horns that had turned back into their golden state. Again he continued with the prayer, palms high, head bowed; Elpis approached Solaris and got to his knees before him. The demon cupped Solaris’ face with his bleeding hands, whispering the words over the angel just a breathe away, spoken like a lover. Elpis’ mouth was burning with each syllable of the holy language, but he continued unhindered by the pain, lips nearly brushing against the lips of his captive angel.
“It will hurt less if you don’t fight it.” Elpis whispered before he claimed Solaris’ lips with his own ashened mouth. The black and red silk scarf that enveloped Solaris and his wings began to glow, slowly tightening it’s grip as it began to bind Solaris, disappearing into the angel as it worked. Elpis began to take advantage of the forming connection and began to flood it with lust.

Solaris winced as Elpis tugged on the ring piercing through his wing. It was the second time that the demon got more of a reaction from his captive angel. What was a hiss before this time came out as a gasp of pain. His breaths came out slow and heavy as he processed the sharp piercing pain in both of his wings.
Gold eyes glared back at Elpis as he sat there and observed his work. He watched the demon stand, and the inexplicable feeling that something was very wrong washed through his body like a wave. His eyes widened as he watched the magic circle spread out across the space, dread washed through him. Solaris was quick to work out what Elpis was trying to do.
For a moment there was fear in his eyes, though he overcame it quickly. He still flinched when Elpis cupped his face with bloodied hands. As soon as the demon’s bloodied hands touched Solaris’ skin, the power of the spell forced the one part of Solaris that had still managed to remain hidden away into the open.
Two brilliant golden rings, one inside of the other manifested above his head. The truth of Solaris’ divinity, and his place in heaven. His halo, magnificent and bright as the sun.
“It will hurt less if you don’t fight it.”
The moment Elpis’ lips touched Solaris’ own it shattered. The sound sharp like smashing glass, white cracks spun out across the golden rings like a spider’s web. Solaris grunted with pain as he felt the spell talking hold. Though he could tell the forming connection was tenuous at best.
Then a thought.
‘What if I let him?’
Solaris let his eyes fall closed, and he let Elpis in. He kissed the demon back, and let the connection between them form. While it meant that Elpis would be the dominating power in this relationship, it still gave Solaris no small measure of his own power to leverage. It meant their connection went both ways.
What Elpis couldn’t have known was the reason all those binding spells failed previously. Demons rarely took into account that Angels possessed a will just as strong as their own, many would rather die than allow any part of themselves be shared and tainted by a Demon. Solaris was not like this, his sense of self and his sense of belief was structured differently.
He didn’t consider himself clean to begin with, so taintining himself by sharing his soul with a Demon wasn’t so abhorrent to Solaris.
As he kissed Elpis back, his halo began to come apart. At first it must have looked like it was disintegrating. This was not the case, as it was in fact transferring in part to Elpis. By the end Elpis would find himself with a fraction (though not quite half) of Solaris’ halo.
As Elpis flooded their forming connection with lust, he’d now be able to feel the vast emptiness that was Solaris. He wasn’t filled with blind faith and reverence like one might think an Angel should be. No. He was filled with a deep solitary loneliness, one that Elpis was now drownining in lust.

The gaze of Heavens burned hotter than any hellfire the demon had ever experienced and Elpis was sure he was about to turn to ash at any moment. But he persisted. His clothing was burning from his body, bare skin starting to sear under the divinity. As he kissed Solaris, the demon kept his eyes tightly shut knowing the mirrors reflected a multitude of golden eyes that were watching the union and would burn his orbs out in an instance if he gazed upon them.
From the moment he started to flood the connection Elpis could feel the emotion hit a wall of resistance and then suddenly it was as if the dam just disappeared as Solaris kissed him back. Lust was rushing in to try to fill vast empty space, the demon finding it just as parlous standing on the edge of the lonely void. It was so deep he might never find his wayback out. But it had been unexpected and surprised Elpis when the angel seemingly accepted the bond; the demon had expected some kind of fight. But the stench of loneliness that permeated Solaris made it relatively clear to the demon. If he kept going, he was likely to break the poor angel…..not that it matter to him, Solaris was never going to be anything but a meal anyway.
As the bond formed, the painful gaze of the heavens was made less and less painful. In a bold move Elpis opened his eyes and released Solaris from his kiss. More divine words fell from his lips, this time they did not smoke when spoken. He felt new power being born into him. With a triumphant smile the demon caressed the angel’s face and let his finger tips slowly travel and explore the real estate available. Eagerly he teased the angle’s nipples with his finger nails, slipping over them tentatively as he traced muscles and flesh. Gradually he would slip south closer and closer to Solaris’ groin before moving back north. Despite manors, Incubus liked to play with their food.

When Elpis broke the kiss, Solaris was left gasping for air. His mind was reeling from Elpis’ influence, not to mention his body felt like it was on fire. The vast emptiness of his soul now filled with too much of the Demon’s own essence, yet it still wasn’t enough to completely fill the pit that was Solaris. Without the demon’s interference Solaris very well may have fallen eventually all on his own…in 100 years, 500 maybe even 1000, who knew? One thing was certain now…Solaris wouldn’t fall. Not that either of them knew it yet.
Elpis couldn’t have known how expertly fucked up Solaris already was, that his belief structure didn’t operate the way that other angel’s did...And that Elpis now sat where 'God' was supposed to in that structure. In the short term it meant that Elpis would experience little in the way of resistance from Solaris, but in the long term ....forced loyalty caused by a corrupted and forced lustful love would eventually turn to uncontrolled obsession and possession. But that was in the future, not the here and now.
Right now, Solaris gave his head a shake as the lust began to take over. When he looked up finally he smirked. He could see the stolen third of his halo like a crown behind Elpis’s head. He did wonder what the demon planned to do with that stolen power....stolen divinity. He doubted the demon would be able to control it well at first.
Solaris looked anything but pitiful as Elpis caressed his face. He looked like he was right where he wanted to be as a twisted kind of devotion was beginning to take root in him. He let out a breathy gasp as Elpis explored his body, teasing his nipples and toying with his body.
He wanted more.
